Welcome to Wrestlingstat

Wrestling is arguably the World's oldest sport.

Men have been trying their strength and unarmed skill in the purest form of personal combat since the beginning of time.

Wrestling or at least origins of the sport can be traced back to at least 15,000 years ago to cave drawings found in France. In Egypt murals on the tombs of Beni Hasan and Babylonian reliefs dating back to 2600 BC shows wrestlers in combat using most of the holds known to the present day sport. In Tuscany c530 BC the Tomb of the Augurs has frescoes depicting men wrestling. In ancient Greece, wrestling in prominent in legend and literature and was highly valued as a form of military exercise without weapons. There were two distinct versions of the game, differing according to the holds and the methods of deciding the victor. The wrestling competition, brutal though it was, was the supreme contest of the Olympic Games. The first recorded Olympic match occurred in the Olympics in 708 BC.In Homer's Iliad there is an account of a wrestling match between Ajax and Ulysses. (Book XXIII)

The ancient Romans had a style similar to Greek wrestling, but eliminated much of its brutality. During the Middle Ages wrestling remained popular and enjoyed the patronage of many royal houses, including those of France, Japan, and England. In the viking age, there were in nothern europe a very popular sport called glima.Glima is the national sport of Iceland. In glima it is illegal to kick and hit, therefore it is called wrestling. The special thing about glima is that the wrestlers uses some special belts (like in sumo) to get a grip in each other. In the viking age the grip was in each others trousers.

Since the Japanese didn't keep any written records until the 8th century, it is impossible to know, aside from legend, exactly when Sumo first developed in Japan. The Kojiki relates a legend about how possession of the Japanese islands was determined by a Sumo match 2,500 years ago between two gods . The Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan), from 720, records the first bout between lowly mortals as taking place in 23 BC.

Early American settlers brought a strong wrestling tradition with them from England. The colonists also found wrestling quite popular among the Native Americans. Amateur wrestling flourished throughout the early years of the nation, and served as a popular activity at country fairs, holiday celebrations, and in military exercises. Of the early American styles, only the catch-as-catch-can style survives, and it has evolved into the modern form of collegiate wrestling.
